Gerard Smith, bassist for the American rock band TV on the Radio, died Wednesday after battling lung cancer, the band announced. He was 34. Smith’s death came shortly after the band completed recording sessions for their latest album, Nine Types of Light. The band revealed he had cancer just a month ago and said Smith would not be able to participate in the upcoming tour—but they had said they were optimistic about his recovery. The group has canceled its concerts for the next few days, starting Wednesday in Detroit. They said they’d release more information when it becomes available.
