At least two people were killed and 116 injured early Sunday when an Amtrak passenger train slammed into a parked CSX freight train in South Carolina. The Amtrak train was on its way to Miami with 139 passengers and eight crew members on board when the crash occurred in Cayce at about 2:30 a.m., authorities said. The two fatalities were later identified as Amtrak employees. South Carolina Governor Henry McMaster said the Amtrak train appeared to be traveling on the wrong track at the time of the crash, though investigators have yet to determine why. “It’s a horrible thing to see, to understand what force was involved,” McMaster said at an afternoon news conference. This marks the third Amtrak crash since December, when a train derailed in Washington state, killing three and injuring dozens of others. Another Amtrak train carrying members of Congress was involved in a crash last week.
