Two aviators for the U.S. Navy were confirmed dead late Wednesday after the F/A-18F Superhornet fighter jet they were flying in crashed off the coast of Key West. The two crew members were pulled from the water and rushed to a Florida hospital Wednesday afternoon, but they succumbed to their injuries, the U.S. Navy announced. Their identities were being withheld until families were notified. The two-seat jet crashed while the pilots were conducting a training flight near the Naval Air Station Key West. Witnesses cited by the Miami Herald said the plane appeared to catch fire while in the air. “I saw the fire and then it just dropped,” Barbie Wilson, who lives nearby, told the Herald. The Navy gave no details on what caused the crash but said it is under investigation.
