Just as obesity has seen a frightening rise among youths, so too has Diabetes. A new analysis published Saturday in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) shows that from 2001 to 2009, the prevalence of Type 1 Diabetes among children ages 10 to 19 rose 19 percent. Type 2 Diabetes rose an even more staggering 30 percent. It is unclear what is exactly behind the spike in Diabetes. Although the condition in children, especially Type 2, is often associated with obesity, other factors may be at play. Dr. Robin S. Goland of Columbia University in New York said “There are a few possibilities, but we need to figure it out if it’s something in the environment or something in our genes.”
