U.K. Defense Chief: Russia a ‘Risk’ to Attack Underseas Cables

The head of Britain's armed forces warned Friday that underseas cables are at “risk” of Russian attacks. Speaking to a defense-focused think tank, Air Chief Marshal Sir Stuart Peach recommended that "in response to the threat posed by the modernisation of the Russian navy, both nuclear and conventional submarines and ships,” the British government and its NATO allies need to prioritize securing international cables to fight such a “new risk to our way of life.” Should the cables ever be cut or disrupted, he added, it would “immediately and potentially catastrophically” damage the Western economy.
