Ukrainian national guardsmen opened fire on a crowd gathered outside a town hall in Krasnoarmeisk in eastern Ukraine. An Associated Press photographer witnessed two people lying unmoving on the ground and insurgent leader Denish Pushilin telling a news agency there was an unspecified number of casualties. The violence occurred hours after Ukraine guardsmen shut down today's voting on the referendum for regional sovereignty. In towns controlled by pro-Russian separatists, voters headed to hastily-made polling stations to vote yes or no in response to the question: "Do you support the act of state self-rule of the Donetsk People's Republic?" Ukraine has already denounced the vote as illegitimate, and the United States, Germany, and France have said they will not recognize the results.
