United Nations envoy Staffan de Mistura said Friday that if the Syrian Kurdish town of Kobani falls to jihadists, thousands of people will be executed. “If this falls, the 700, plus perhaps the 12,000 people, apart from the fighters, will most likely be massacred,” de Mistura said of the 700 (mostly elderly) civilians still trapped in the town and the 12,000 who have left but have yet to make it across the Turkish border. Turkish tanks across the border from Kobani have not intervened and the U.S. acknowledged that despite its bombing of ISIS targets in the area, it is unlikely to save the city.
