University Recognizes Third Gender

SPECTRUM

Students may identify as ‘neutral.’

The University of Vermont has recently moved to recognize a third gender: neutral. The New York Times follows the case of one genderqueer student, Rocko Gieselman, who asks that “they” be used as a pronoun instead of “he” or “she.” The university has also agreed to use it, and allows students to choose new first names (regardless of whether students have legally changed it) and record these details in the campus’s information system so that professors can access the correct terminology.
