The United Nations’ top nuclear inspector has unexpectedly resigned amid concerns of renewed tensions with Iran following President Trump’s pullout from the 2015 nuclear deal. The International Atomic Energy Agency announced the news late Friday, saying Tero Varjoranta, the agency’s deputy director-general and head of its Department of Safeguards, had stepped down effective immediately. Varjoranta will be replaced by Massimo Aparo, the head of the agency’s Iran team. The agency gave no reason for Varjoranta’s abrupt departure, but it came just days after Trump announced his decision to go against his European allies and withdraw the U.S. from a landmark nuclear deal with Iran.
