U.S. aid that was intended to help fight terrorism and drug trafficking was used by the government of former Colombian President Alvaro Uribe to fund smear campaigns against political opponents, according to a report by The Washington Post. The report also charges abuses of power and illegal actions by the Colombian government, as American cash supplied to smack drug rings has been used to carry out spying operations. This despite often-cited claims by the Obama administration that aid to Colombia has been used to turn a failed state into a thriving democracy.
