The trade war between the United States and China stepped up Monday as the countries hit each other with the largest rounds of tariffs yet at the stroke of midnight. President Trump imposed fresh levies on $200 billion in Chinese imports—Beijing responded with tariffs on $60 billion in American goods. The tariffs are now so widespread that China is reportedly running out of U.S. products to target. There is no sign of the trade war cooling down—there are no further talks scheduled to resolve the dispute. Soon after the fresh duties went into effect, China accused the U.S. of engaging in “trade bullyism” and said Trump was intimidating other countries to submit to its will through measures such as tariffs. China said it was still willing to enter discussions but only if they’re “based on mutual respect and equality.”
