U.S. Calls for Diplomat's Release

Diplomatic Crisis

Charged with double murder in Pakistan.

The U.S. has demanded the release of an American diplomat charged with murdering two men in Lahore, Pakistan, on January 27, insisting that he cannot be tried because of his diplomatic status. "The diplomat acted in self-defense when confronted by two armed men on motorcycles," the U.S. embassy in Pakistan said in a statement. Another person was run over and killed by a vehicle carrying the diplomat's colleagues as they rushed to his aid. Magistrates have delayed the case until next week while the shooting is investigated.
