The attack on the Office of Personnel Management’s databases this year may have affected an estimated 18 million current, former, and prospective federal employees—more than four times the 4.2 million the agency publicly said—and the number is expected to rise. Citing U.S. officials briefed on the investigation, CNN reports FBI Director James Comey revealed the higher figure in a closed-door briefing to senators in recent weeks. The breach may include people who applied for government jobs, but were never hired. Investigators say they believe Chinese hackers are behind the attack.
