The U.S. has launched an investigation into the Syrian crackdown for possible war crimes, a senior White House official said Friday. The official said the U.S. is considering further economic actions against Damascus, including sanctions on the country’s oil sector. Since protests began three months, officials estimate some 1,300 people have been arrested. Meanwhile, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton wrote in an editorial in an Arab newspaper that the U.S. “chooses to stand with the Syrian people,” while Syrian President Bashar al-Assad’s regime has “disregard for the will of its citizens and Iran’s hideous interference.”
