U.S.: Iraq Deadlier Now

Inspector General says military glossed over instability in the last year.

This doesn't bode well for the withdrawal of U.S. troops. A U.S. review of Iraq finds the country more dangerous than just a year ago, with a resurgence in Shiite militia violence, bombings, and assassinations. June was the deadliest month for U.S. military in Iraq in two years, with 15 soldiers killed, and there has been an increase in rocket attacks in Baghdad's Green Zone. Stuart Bowen Jr., the U.S. Special Inspector General for Iraq Reconstruction, criticized the military for glossing over Iraq's instability. “Iraq remains an extraordinarily dangerous place to work," said Bowen in his report. "It is less safe, in my judgment, than 12 months ago."
