American officials may have had a false sense of security in Libya before the recent attack at the consulate in Benghazi. The diplomatic team there may have come to rely too heavily on Libyan security guards who had only recently been trained. The Libyan guards responded effectively to a minor bombing in June in Benghazi. “That the local security did so well back in June probably gave us a false sense of security,” an American official said. “We may have fooled ourselves.” A Special Forces team visited the compound in April to beef up its security team and conduct a review of the consulate’s defenses.
