U.S. Offers Gbagbo 'Dignified Exit'

Defeated Ivory Coast prez won’t step down.

The United States has offered to help Laurent Gbagbo make a “dignified exit” in order to help the country avert a return to civil war. Gbagbo lost a recent presidential election, but has refused calls from the international community to step down. Another effort by leaders from around Africa to convince Gbagbo to leave office failed on Monday, and a State Department official said his window of opportunity is closing. Gbagbo has refused to meet with or speak to U.S. State Department representatives.
