The International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP) has begun an effort to “break” the cycle of mistrust between minority communities and police forces and atone for their role in “society’s historical mistreatment of communities of color,” Wellsley, Mass., chief of police Terrence M. Cunningham announced Monday. As part of a speech delivered at a convention in San Diego on Monday, Cunningham told other police chiefs that it was time to admit to the “dark side of our shared history” with regards to police treatment of minorities. “While we obviously cannot chage the past,” Cunningham told those assembled, “it is clear that we must change the future.”
