The United States recorded 55,054 new coronavirus cases Friday, according to data from Johns Hopkins University. It’s the largest daily increase in cases since August 14, a sign containment efforts against the virus are meeting with only middling success, especially in the West and Midwest regions. The U.S. continues to have the largest number of COVID-19 cases in the world even as President Donald Trump gives rosy predictions that the country is beating the pandemic.
