Another day, another failure by American regulators: The Food and Drug Administration rejected a vaccine for hens that would have prevented salmonella in eggs even though the treatment would have cost less than a penny per dozen eggs. American regulators declare that there wasn’t enough evidence to require the vaccine, even though Britain eliminated a salmonella outbreak by using it a decade ago. The ongoing recall of nearly 550 million eggs from two Iowa farms is one of the largest ever.
