An unidentified U.S. service member was killed in eastern Afghanistan Thursday following a “wound sustained during a combat operation,” according to a release from the U.S. Forces-Afghanistan Public Affairs office. The release adds that an Afghan security force member was also killed, and “several” others were injured. The name of the slain service member will be withheld “until 24 hours after next of kin notification is complete,” in keeping with military policy. The death is one of the more than 2,300 U.S. military casualties that have occurred since the war began in 2001, according to CNN.
