A U.S. armed forces member has been killed in an apparent insider attack in Afghanistan, the NATO-led Resolute Support mission said in a statement Saturday. Another U.S. service member was wounded in the attack. “Initial reports indicate the attacker was a member of the Afghan National Defense and Security Forces. Initial reports also indicate the attacker was immediately killed by other Afghan Forces,” the mission said. The incident, the latest in a spate of such insider attacks this year, is under investigation. It comes after U.S. Secretary of Defense James Mattis said in September that some training and advisory operations in Afghanistan would be scaled back so that security can be assessed, with Afghan forces also to undergo extra training and vetting. The name of the deceased U.S. soldier has not yet been released. The wounded soldier is said to be in stable condition.
