The spate of drone strikes in recent days is no coincidence: President Obama and his national security team planned them two weeks ago to “send a signal” to the deadly Haqqani network and Pakistan, according to The Washington Post. Attacks on Thursday and Friday were carried out near the Haqqani headquarters in the North Waziristan capital of Miran Shah, a city that has previously been off-limits. The Washington Post says that Obama and his team also debated carrying out strikes against Haqqani leaders like the one that killed Osama bin Laden, but has so far decided against it because of the risk of destabilizing Pakistan.
