As part of the $1 billion in aid pledged by the Obama administration after the fall of President Mubarak, the White House announced to Congress Friday it will give Egypt $450 in emergency assistance. The aid is intended to ease the country’s transition into democracy. The announcement was met with resistance from lawmakers critical of the ongoing unrest after protests that threatened the American Embassy in Cairo this month. Still, the Obama administration says it’s committed to the aid. “Our partnership must empower those who would see their nations emerge as true democracies,” Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said at the U.N. General Assembly this week.
