Team USA’s Dana Vollmer set the world record Sunday at the women’s 100-meter butterfly stroke in the qualifying heat for swimming. Vollmer hit the wall at 55.98 seconds, 0.08 seconds faster than the previous world record, set by Sarah Sjostorm of Sweden in the 2009 world championships in Rome. Lu Ying of China finished second with 56.87 seconds, Alicia Cotts of Australia finished third at 56.94 seconds and Sjostorm came in fourth. It’s been a good outing so far for Vollmer, who missed qualifying in the Beijing Olympics: she also set an Olympic record in Saturday morning’s heats.
