Utah is set to execute prisoner Ronnie Lee Gardner by firing squad after a judge approved his request to die by the grisly method on Friday. Utah is the only state to keep the firing squad on the books as a method of execution; typically, it uses lethal injection but prisoners are given a choice. Gardner killed a lawyer 25 years ago during a shootout. Utah has executed two other prisoners by firing squad since the Supreme Court legalized the death penalty in 1976.
