The University of Virginia’s satellite campus in Wise was cleared Wednesday night after a report of a gunman—which state police later confirmed was a hoax. Shortly before 9 p.m. Wednesday, a UVA Wise student called 911, saying there was a man on campus armed with a gun, state police said. Campus, local, and state police all responded by enacting a building-by-building lockdown. At the same time, the student who called 911 eventually confessed to state police that the whole thing was a hoax.
