Ringing in the new year on the very first day of 2017, someone altered the iconic Hollywood sign in Los Angeles to make it read “Hollyweed,” an apparent nod to the state’s new marijuana law. No one has taken responsibility for the creative stunt – which drew awe and praise on Twitter – but the LAPD is reportedly treating the incident as misdemeanor trespassing. TMZ cited police as saying surveillance footage would almost certainly reveal who the culprit is. The vandalism was not merely a weed joke, but apparently a way to mark the coming into force of California’s Proposition 64, which legalizes the recreational use of marijuana.
