Vanity, Prince Protegée, Dead at 57

R.I.P.

“Nasty Girl” singer suffered kidney failure and abdominal illness.

Vanity, Prince’s former protegée and a member of the group Vanity 6, died at a hospital in Fremont, California, on Monday. She was 57. The singer—born Denise Katrina Matthews—had been battling kidney failure and abdominal illness in recent years, according to TMZ, which first reported the news. The Canadian native had launched a GoFundMe campaign last year, announcing that she had been diagnosed with an inflammation of the small intestines in a condition called sclerosis encapsulating peritonitis. Matthews and Vanity 6 were most remembered for the hit “Nasty Girl.” The singer also had a successful acting career, with roles in “The Last Dragon,” “52 Pick-Up,” and “Action Jackson.”
