Vanuatu authorities have ordered the full evacuation of an entire island as a rumbling volcano looks set to blow. About 11,000 people on Ambae island were hit with mandatory evacuation orders Thursday and told not to return to the area until Oct. 6. Officials of the Pacific island nation said they have prepared two sites on a nearby island to house the evacuees. Authorities had initially relocated residents who lived close to the Manaro volcano but said ministers met on Thursday and decided they didn’t want to risk people’s lives. The Manaro volcano has been active since 2005 but authorities believe recent volcanic activity hints at a much bigger eruption this time around.
