Vietnam Sentences Elderly Australian to Death

73-year-old found guilty of trafficking heroin.

A 73-year-old Australian citizen has been sentenced to death in Vietnam for allegedly trying to smuggle heroin out of the country. Nguyen Thi Huong, who is originally from Vietnam, was arrested at an airport in December 2014 when 36 bars of soap in her luggage were found to contain heroin. She had been planning to fly back to Australia with the soap, but said she was not aware that the soap contained drugs and a woman had simply asked her to transport it. On Wednesday, a court rejected her argument and issued the death penalty.
