HBO’s Last Week Tonight with John Oliver didn’t air on Sunday, in observance of Independence Day, but fear not! The British comedian has posted a web-exclusive video to celebrate what he calls 'the day of Colonial Aggression.'
Oliver offers no actual coverage of last week’s news, but instead gives us a perfectly accurate account of everyone’s 4th of July fireworks viewing, from the awful parking ('There were several spots that looked like spots but turned out not to be spots.') to the classical music soundtrack ('If they played Vivaldi at monster truck rallies, schools would start taking field trips there.') and the blow-by-blow of the fireworks themselves.
Unlike his fellow countryman Stephen Merchant, Oliver champions the American spirit, in particular our ability to 'embrace excitement while letting disappointment and failure slip away.' He might have a point there.
