The state of Virginia is set to execute Teresa Lewis on Thursday, its first execution of a woman in nearly 100 years. Lewis hired her lover and his friend to murder her husband and stepson in 2002. Lewis’s lawyers say that she has an IQ of 72; the Supreme Court has ruled it is illegal to execute anyone who is “mentally retarded,” which generally means an IQ of less than 70. Virginia Governor Bob McDonnell has declined to spare Lewis; her last hope is the United States Supreme Court.
