Volkswagen’s U.S. chief stepped down Wednesday night as the German automaker continues to face backlash over its emissions-cheating scandal. A company statement said Michael Horn’s departure was “effectively immediately,” but was by “mutual agreement.” Volkswagen did not give a reason for Horn’s departure and made no mention of the emissions scandal. Volkswagen is negotiating with the Environmental Protection Agency, the Department of Justice, and lawyers representing consumers who are suing for compensation after the company was caught using “default device” software to systematically cheat on U.S. regulators’ tests. U.S. executive Hinrich Woebcken will replace Horn on an interim basis.
