Volkswagen will recall as many as 500,000 vehicles over concerns that the company circumvented environmental regulations related to smog reduction. The allegations made by the Environmental Protection Agency say VW cars are programmed to switch to a lower nitrogen-oxide emission output while undergoing testing—and then to pollute more heavily during everyday driving. An EPA spokesperson said that such devices are “illegal and a threat to public health.”
