The family of Sam Walton has pledged $800 million to his daughter Alice’s new art museum in Arkansas—the largest cash donation to an art museum in U.S. history. The Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art opens in Bentonville, Arkansas on November 11 and covers American art from the Colonial era up until the present day. A majority of the 400 works that will be on display when the museum opens are owned by Alice Walton or the family’s foundation. About $325 million of the new pledge will be used to purchase more artwork.
