George Washington’s copy of the Constitution is returning home. After fetching a record $9.8 million winning bid at auction at Christie’s New York on Friday, the historic document will be returned to the library at Mount Vernon, a Christie’s spokesman said. The winning bid for the 223-year-old document, which includes marginal notes by Washington in the sections on the powers of the president, was made by the Mount Vernon Ladies’ Association of the Union. The nearly $10 million price tag is the most ever for the sale of an American historic document.
