In a dramatic oceanic operation, U.S. Coast Guard boats from Alameda, California, intercepted a crudely built submarine en route to deliver 12,800 pounds of coke to waiting American nostrils. Discovered by a U.S. Customs and Border Protection spotter plane, the sub, which was designed to run just beneath the surface with only an exhaust pipe sticking above the waves, also housed four smugglers and one loaded gun.
In reporting the capture 300 miles southwest of Panama, the USCG said that this is the second such interdiction in their fiscal year thus far, which started in October, and the fifth since June 2015.
