Each year, hundreds of thousands of geeks make the pilgrimage out to San Diego—which of course in German means “a whale’s vagina”—to get a sneak peek at the finest nerd-offerings from the realms of film, television, and of course, comics.
There were several highlights to the 2014 edition, including a secret unveiling of footage from Zack Snyder’s upcoming Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, starring Ben Affleck as Batman, Henry Cavill as Superman, and Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman, a clip from Joss Whedon’s blockbuster sequel Avengers: Age of Ultron, starring, well, just about everybody, and one of the ultimate highlights: the awesome trailer to Mad Max: Fury Road, a sequel to The Road Warrior starring Tom Hardy and Charlize Theron that will hopefully make you forget Tina Turner’s Beyond Thunderdome ever happened.
For those who couldn’t make it, we’ve compiled some of the hottest footage to unspool at the fest. The Interstellar and Avengers clips haven’t surfaced online yet, but we’ve included everything from the Interstellar panel discussion with Matthew McConaughey and filmmaker Christopher Nolan to that Batman v Superman teaser everyone’s buzzing about.
BATMAN v SUPERMAN: DAWN OF JUSTICE
This may get pulled down quickly, but a courageous fan managed to shoot the :50 teaser that director Zack Snyder—with Affleck, Cavill, and Gadot in tow—unspooled at Comic-Con. It’s not much, but the nerds seem very impressed.
He also debuted this image of The Fast and the Furious star Gadot as Wonder Woman:
MAD MAX: FURY ROAD
The fourth film in the Mad Max series—and first since 1985’s regrettable Beyond Thunderdome—looks like it’ll see the franchise return to the awesomeness that was The Road Warrior, starring Tom Hardy as Mad Max, a chrome-domed Charlize Theron as Imperator Furiosa, and a gaggle of others. Arguably the highlight, footage-wise, of Comic-Con ’14.
While new footage of the flick hasn’t materialized yet, you can watch filmmaker Christopher Nolan (at his first Comic-Con!) and star Matthew McConaughey discuss the movie during their panel session.
Directed Edgar Wright may have departed the Marvel superhero project—he was replaced by Peyton Reed—but Marvel honcho Kevin Feige sat on a panel for the film that included Reed, along with stars Paul Rudd (Ant-Man), Michael Douglas, Evangeline Lilly, and Corey Stoll.
AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON
Joss Whedon (knee surgery) and Scarlett Johansson (pregnancy) couldn’t make it, but the rest of the Avengers: Age of Ultron gang were there, including ringmaster Robert Downey Jr. (Iron Man), Mark Ruffalo (Hulk), Chris Evans (Captain America), Chris Hemsworth (Thor), Samuel L. Jackson (Nick Fury), Jeremy Renner (Hawkeye), Josh Brolin (Thanos), James Spader (Ultron), Paul Bettany (The Vision), Elizabeth Olsen (Scarlet Witch), and Aaron Taylor-Johnson (Quicksilver). The footage isn’t online yet, but here’s the cast chatting at the panel, including Downey Jr. handing out roses.
GAME OF THRONES
Watch the full hilarious Comic-Con panel for Game of Thrones, including showrunners David Benioff and Dan Weiss, author George R.R. Martin, and stars Kit Harington (Jon Snow), Nikolaj Coster-Waldau (Jamie Lannister), Maisie Williams (Arya Stark), Sophie Turner (Sansa Stark), Pedro Pascal (Red Viper), Gwendoline Christie (Brienne of Tarth), and many more.
THE HOBBIT: BATTLE OF THE FIVE ARMIES
Lord of the Rings nerd Stephen Colbert—dressed in Middle Earth rags—moderated a hilarious panel that included filmmaker Peter Jackson and stars Benedict Cumberbatch, Cate Blanchett, Orlando Bloom, Evangeline Lilly, Lee Pace, Andy Serkis, and more.
Watch the trailer for Kevin Smith’s gonzo horror film centering on a podcaster who goes M.I.A. in the backwoods of Manitoba, and is kidnapped by a sadistic old man who wishes to transform him into... a walrus. The film stars Michael Parks, Justin Long, Haley Joel Osment, and features a cameo by Johnny Depp.
THE WALKING DEAD: SEASON 5
AMC unveiled this gruesome, action-packed trailer for the fifth season of their hit zombie series The Walking Dead, which will premiere on Oct. 12.
