Days after two planes struck New York’s World Trade Center on September 11, 2001, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers participated in benefit concert “America: A Tribute to Heroes.” The band performed their iconic “I Won’t Back Down.” The now-deceased Petty stares into the camera intensely as he sings the opening lyrics, “Well I won’t back down / No I won’t back down / You can stand me up at the gates of hell / but I won’t back down.” The moving video has seen a resurgence in the wake of Petty’s sudden death Monday.
