At 9:00 p.m. eastern on Monday, President Trump will address the nation on his plans for the long-running U.S. war in Afghanistan. As The Daily Beast reported earlier in the day, the president is “expected to endorse an Afghan strategy that keeps U.S. troops on the ground, but overturns what the military sees as two Obama-era mistakes: announcing a deadline for U.S. troop withdrawal; and later, forcing the Pentagon to send costly contractors instead of U.S. troops to stay under the Obama-imposed troop cap, current and former U.S. officials say.” Officials do worry, however, that he could reverse his policy before speech time.
