A burial team wearing protective clothing prepare the body of a person suspected to have died of the Ebola virus for interment. The UN mission to combat Ebola wants to see significant progress in fighting the deadly disease with 60 days, including ensuring that 70 percent of cases receive treatment, the agency's new chief said. At least 3,091 people have died from Ebola since the West African outbreak was first reported in the remote southeast forest region of Guinea in March. The other two most affected countries are Sierra Leone and Liberia.

Kobani, Syria
October 3, 2014

Smoke rises from the Syrian town, seen from near the Mursitpinar border crossing on the Turkish-Syrian border in the southeastern town of Suruc, in Sanliurfa province. Turkey will do what it can to prevent the predominantly Kurdish town of Kobani, near its border with Syria, from falling to ISIS fighters, Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu said late Thursday, but stopped short of committing to military action. Hours before Davutoglu's comments, parliament gave the government powers to order cross-border military incursions against ISIS, and to allow foreign coalition forces to launch similar operations from Turkish territory.
