An 8-year-old boy was shot in the chest and back Saturday while playing outside at a baby shower in Chicago’s West Englewood neighborhood, the Chicago Tribune reports. A 10-year-old girl was also among the six people shot at the family event, where about 20 children are said to have been playing outside when the gunfire erupted. Richard Nix, whose grandson was reportedly hosting the baby shower, told the Tribune the kids all rushed into the house when the shots rang out and piled on top of each other at the door trying to get inside. “It wasn’t nothing but kids in front of the house, sitting on the porch. They was just playing, and the shooting went off,” Nix was quoted as saying. “The ones that were doing the shooting, none of them get shot. It’s just all the innocent people,” he said. Both the 8-year-old and 10-year-old were taken to an area hospital and stabilized, authorities said. A 29-year-old woman was also shot in the shoulder and chest and left in critical condition, while three others were shot but suffered non-life-threatening injuries. Police reportedly had no suspects in custody as of Saturday evening. Police spokesman Anthony Guglielmi tweeted that “individuals on scene are not being cooperative with detectives.”
