Americans love a good conspiracy theory, and plenty have been bandied about this election season. But what about conspiracy theories that turned out to be, well, not theoretical at all?
It’s classic conspiracy theory stuff—a secret meeting at some secluded, sinister mansion, where the global elite confer on how to properly run the world. But then, there’s the Bilderberg Group, a very real—and very private—annual conference of super-elites from the worlds of politics, business, finance, and more. Founded in 1954, Bilderberg has been a topic of fascination for conspiracy theorists for decades. One can see why: bankers, heads of state, and CEOs meet to discuss world affairs, and keep their discussions under absolute lock-and-key. Ostensibly, Bilderberg’s mission is to promote capitalism and Western interests in every corner of the globe. Those who see more sinister intentions believe the group seeks to control the global economy from behind the scenes or ensure robust deregulation favored by large corporations. Whatever the truth, it’s staying behind closed doors.
Tom Cruise is back as Jack Reacher in Jack Reacher: Never Go Back, taking on a conspiracy of epic proportions in a fight for the truth. Don’t miss the action in theaters and IMAX, opening October 21.
