Although she bypassed the red carpet, Michelle Obama turned heads at dinnertime when she emerged wearing a black beaded chiffon gown by Monique Lhuillier with capped sleeves and lace paneling. When the first lady stepped out in the dress, the designer promptly tweeted, “I am honored @MichelleObama is wearing me to the White House correspondence dinner tonight !! She looks amazing!!! xx Monique.”

The always-elegant Kerry Washington looked stunning as usual in a black and white dress by Wes Gordon and Christian Louboutin heels. The actress took to Twitter earlier in the morning to express her excitement about the event: “Just had my fitting with @Stephendatailor - my awesome go to tailor in DC! - getting EXCITED about tonight. #whcd,” she wrote.

The Modern Family actress stole the show in a form-fitting teal dress by Herve L. Leroux with cut out details at the bodice. She added more color to her look with an array of sparkly pink Lorraine Schwartz jewelry.

Kate Mara looked polished in a minimalist white dress by Prada with a bow detail at the neck. She paired her gown with a lime green embellished clutch.

Claire Danes, who walked the red carpet alongside husband Hugh Dancy and CBS News’s Bob Schieffer, sparkled in a baby blue Prada dress with sequin embellishments along the sides.

Hayden Panettiere wowed in a yellow dress by Katharine Kidd with cut outs on the sides. The Nashville star gave her followers a sneak peek at her beauty look by posting a TwitPic in the car en route to the event.

The House of Cards actress looked elegant in a navy one-shoulder gown by Rolando Santana from the designer’s spring 2013 collection. She teamed her dress with a silver clutch by Cecelia.

Vogue EIC Anna Wintour channeled old Hollywood glamour in a fitted gold lace gown, which she layered with a white fur capelet.

Fresh off hosting the MTV Movie Awards, Rebel Wilson hit another red carpet – alongside Olympic gold medalist Gabby Douglas – in a dark blue lace three-quarter-length sleeve dress by Theia. Douglas wore a one-shoulder cream colored gown by David Meister.

Katy Perry opted for a more conservative look than usual for the high-profile political event: a gorgeous green silk gown by Giambattista Valli Couture, which she cinched at the waist with a bronze belt.

Huffington walked the red carpet in a floor-length black lace dress with a leather bodice with Bon Jovi, who looked dapper in a tux.
