White House Gives Up on Mubarak

Sees ‘no scenario’ in which he retains power.

We’ll look forward to reading the behind-the-scenes account on WikiLeaks one day: The Wall Street Journal says the White House held a meeting Monday in which it made clear it sees “no scenario” for Mubarak to hold on to power. The U.S. and its allies are discussing how the embattled president could step aside or set an election for September in which he will not run. Mubarak’s options are looking limited after the military announced Monday it would not use force against protesters. President Obama has sent Frank G. Wisner, who served as U.S. ambassador to Egypt from 1986 to 1991, back to Cairo to meet with Mubarak.
