Before President Donald Trump will agree to a deal with Democrats to allow so-called “Dreamers” to stay in the United States legally, the White House will demand that lawmakers crack down on children crossing the border to flee violence in Central America, the New York Times reported. White House officials said Sunday that this would close immigration loopholes that encourage parents from sending their children into the country illegally. Last month Trump said he would end Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals, an Obama-era policy policy that protects immigrants who were brought into the country as children from deportation, as well as providing them with legal work permits. Lawmakers have until March to make a deal, or thousands of Dreamers will lose their protections.
