Jason Kessler, one of the organizers of Charlottesville’s “Unite the Right” rally last year, got preliminary approval to host an anniversary rally at the National Mall, according to The Washington Post. Kessler hopes, the Post reports, to host a “white civil rights” rally, to protest “civil rights abuses in Charlottesville.” When he applied for the anniversary rally in Charlottesville, the city denied him, likely because of the self-identified Nazi who drove his car into a group of protesters last year and killed Heather Heyer. Kessler is now suing the city for violating his First Amendment rights. Washington’s National Park Service approved Kessler’s May 8 request, the Post reports, but has not yet issued a permit.
