Leading foreign-policy expert Walter Mead explains in The American Interest why the Arab Spring may well be coming to Syria. Not only is the opposition to the brutal Assad regime “raising its game” with attacks on military targets, but the country’s nervous business elites and regional allies are beginning to turn on the ruling family. Mead is cautiously optimistic that the regime—which is facing blowback for its friendship with Iran—will soon fall. “Butcher Assad’s grip on power seems a little less tight today. We shall see.”
