Wisconsin Republicans, just weeks away from losing control of the state’s governor’s and attorney general’s offices, are seeking to push through last-gasp measures to hobble the incoming Democratic administration. The maneuvering recalls similar action taken by Republicans in North Carolina two years ago, and is being discussed in Michigan before a Democratic governor takes office there as well. One proposal from the lame-duck session to be voted on Tuesday would weaken the powers of the attorney general’s office and could stop incoming Democrats from withdrawing Wisconsin from a multi-state lawsuit that seeks the repeal of the Affordable Care Act. Another would limit early voting to two weeks. A separate GOP proposal to move the 2020 presidential primary election from April to March appears to be dead. Wisconsin residents testified late into the night against the measures, as protesters filled the statehouse chanting “Shame!” and frequently disrupted the hearings.
